Maelstrom
Two men meet on a stage. They fall in an (often literal) spiral of humorous, energetic and enchanting moments. Fast paced, with incredible skills, and also a taste for classical music, Alud brings a story about masculinity and vulnerability, with a lot of playful and mesmerising ways of doing circus!
In this performance, the topic of masculinity, its history and different conventions are brought to the forefront, in a sometimes surreal manner. In the signature style of ALUD, which is a mix of aerial straps, partner acrobatics, dance and physical theatre, the audience is immersed in a new world, full of surprises, emotionally charged moments and humour!
Maelstrom is a contemporary circus show, built from an in-depth exploration of masculinity, a topic that remains critically relevant in today’s society. It evokes both humorous and poignant moments with the audience. We do this with an understanding that any discussions about masculinity often produce a variety of polarising views, but our real-life experiences are full of grey areas and nuances. So, this piece is not a speech, and it’s not offering a perfect solution either, it’s a journey of two men, exploring themselves and their relationship to the other, bringing up grey areas, as a question to the audience.
Optional Audience Conversation
Optional post-show talk on masculinity — offered as an open discussion with the audience or interactive format, co-organised with the venue.
